This spectacular transporter with its distinctive, futuristic design was built in 1955 at the request of MB racing director Alfred Neubauer, on the extended chassis of a Mercedes-Benz 300 S and with the engine of the 300 SL. The so-called "Blue Wonder" was the fastest truck in the world for many years and was used exclusively for transporting Mercedes-Benz racing cars. From 1956, the racing transporter served as an exhibition vehicle and eye-catcher in the USA, until it was scrapped in the 1960s. A perfect replica is now on display in the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart.
The Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR with starting number 658 was driven in 1955 at the famous Mille Miglia by Juan Manuel Fangio (ARG) – one of the most significant Formula 1 drivers in history. Fangio started without a co-driver and left the starting ramp in Brescia at 6:58 AM – corresponding to his starting number 658, which matched the respective starting time.
